“S o that’s it?” I asked. “It’s just that simple?”

“And that hard.” Elise sat back and smiled with a little shrug.

Two hours after coming into Timeless Keepsakes, I had another facet of the story Vaughn had told me.

Elise had three older sisters, all of whom had married men from the future.

“Have you ever heard of a lady named Vaughn?” I asked.

Elise shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

“I think she has something to do with this time travel thing.”

“Well, it had to start somewhere,” she said. “Somehow.”

“You believe it then?” I asked.

She gave me a look. “You’re here aren’t you?”

“You say here is 1869.”

“I’d take you outside. Show you around, but I believe the door is your portal.”

“Don’t you think it’s odd that everyone has a different portal?”

“Don’t you think it’s odd that there are portals at all?” she asked.

I laughed. “Yes. It is odd.”

“Are you hungry?” she asked, pulling a basket toward her. “Hector sent food in case I got snowed in or…” she shrugged. “Something.”

I watched her as she put biscuits on two plates. “Something meaning me?” I asked.

She handed me a plate. “Yes,” she admitted with a little smile. “You.”

“How did you know it was me?”

“Do you think it’s you?”

I leaned forward and, gently placing my hands on her cheeks, I kissed her lightly on the lips.

“Yes,” I said. “I think it’s you.”

She smiled. “Me too.”

“There’s one problem, though,” I said.

“There are probably a lot of problems.”

“No, really,” I said. “Am I supposed to just live here in your shop?”

She bit her lip again. Somehow this didn’t seem to have occurred to her.

“It’s a nice shop,” she said.

“It is a nice shop,” I said, “But I think there has to be a better way.”

“I have no doubt about that,” she said, taking a bite of her biscuit. “We just have to figure it out.”

“How can you be so sure that we can figure this out?”

“I’ve seen it happen before,” she said. “It always seems impossible at first.”

“Okay,” I said. “Let’s see what happens.”

“Really?” She seemed surprised.

“Why not?” I asked. “But here’s the thing. If I can’t leave, then you can’t leave.”

“Well… how are we going to survive?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

She shook her head. “I don’t know if that will work.”

“Maybe the time travel has some kind of time mechanism on it.”

“Like what?”

“Maybe we have to stay together for a certain amount of time. You said that the men stayed for a while with your sisters.”

“Yes, before they figured it out.”

“We already have it figured out,” I said. “So maybe we’re just ahead of the game.”

“Maybe,” she said, but she did not seem convinced.

We sat in silence for a few minutes.

“Why don’t you have any customers?” I asked.

“Because Mrs. Johnson called me a woman of ill-repute.”

“A what?” I said, trying not to laugh at the preposterous statement.

“She said it’s because I’m a business owner. And single.” She gathered up our empty plates. Then she clasped her hands together in front of her.

The snow had turned to ice, little stinging pellets slamming against the window.
